Continuing Legal Education

CLEs, Continuing Legal Education classes, are both a bane and a boon to lawyers, for the same reason—you’re out of the office. Maybe you’ll learn something you want to know, maybe it’s mandatory, but in any event, you’re out of the office.
It’s a bane—you have to check in, probably, to see if anything’s on fire. [...]

Sigh.
Out of state deposition.
Plaintiff’s attorney is following a script.
Twenty-five defense attorneys on laptops or blackberries,
paying hardly any attention, except
whoever’s on that hour to object.
We’ve all got our email addresses–
we just take turns emailing that hour’s notes.
Bad headache–
I’ll need to buy Excedrin
at the Wal-Mart next door during lunch.
Scratching pens,
weak coffee,
open ended plaintiff’s questions
way too much re-direct [...]

For the sake of argument

Lawyers like to argue; when there aren’t opposing counsel or ornery clients to argue with, they argue amongst their own colleagues.  Partners, especially– they get paid a lot to argue, so they argue a lot, to earn their salary.
Which would have been fine, except that they were arguing over punctuation, syntax, and word choice in [...]

You wouldn’t know me, to drive behind me in my boring-looking gold Jetta wagon, with 80,000 miles and several nicks and dings and counting. But then I cut in front of you, one hand on the wheel, the other on the windowsill, tapping my fingers to the Beasties and Bosstones blaring from the radio, [...]

Sausage Egg McMuffins and Quarter Pounders with Cheese are nice for breakfast and rush-hour dinner every once in a while.  Not every day.  Ugh.  Especially interspersed with Courthouse Food, which is Universally Awful.

Never let a civil litigator tell you that they love litigation because they have a passion for justice.  [...]

Inquiring minds

A black wrap dress, a b & w scarf at the neck, pearl studs, hose, & black strappy mary janes.  I was overdressed, compared to the other female associates, which is fine with me.
I had kielbasa and mashed potato leftovers for lunch.  With an apple.  Sorry– dinner isn’t always exciting around here.  At least the [...]

Back to school jitters

I have…
cut my nails and dithered over whether to paint them
swiffered the floor
dithered over what to wear
bought groceries for the week
dithered some more over what to wear
and
dithered over what to wear
I know they are business casual in the office, so I don’t need to wear a suit tomorrow but I want to make a good [...]

Love Thursday

I tried to talk myself out of it. To say that the hours and the stress weren’t worth it. But the fact is, I deeply, deeply miss being a litigator. I deeply desire the charge of being in court, of problem-solving with colleagues, of being intellectually challenged by my work, and in [...]

Crap, a real legal job offer.
At someplace I’d like.
Not too many hours.

Freelance piece on barbecue.
Tasty, fun. I really want
a salad.

Don we now our gay apparel

I had a client once who was being evicted from public housing. He’d had a rough hand dealt to him— mentally retarded, emotionally impaired, with paranoia, anxiety, depression, probably borderline personality. He was a mess, and his parents—get this—MOVED AWAY one day while he was at work at a local retailer like K-Mart, rounding up [...]
